Biography
Alfred William “Bill” Horace Hughes was born on the 25th May 1915 in Kentish Town, London. He was the eldest son of Alfred William and Louise Hughes and brother of Allan, Ronald, Joyce, Eric and Sylvia Hughes. His mother was born in London in 1897 just after her parents and older family had immigrated to England from Germany. The family name was Hofmeister but at the start of WW1 they changed it to Masters and two of her brothers were killed in the fighting having joined the British Army.
Bill was married to Helen Harvey in 1936 and they lived in Wandsworth, London. Bill worked as an Attendant/Usher in the local Cinema and must have gained some experience of working with the projectors and film as well. After the outbreak of War, the entire Hughes family moved to 9 Stanley Oak Road, Llandudno Junction in North Wales.
Bill joined the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve and reached the rank of Leading Aircraftman. He was assigned to 1483 Flight and his previous Cinema experience must have had an influence as in Wellington T2802 it is noted that he was an electrician in charge of camera guns.
Following his death, Bill’s body was buried alongside two of the others on board in Newmarket Cemetery. He is commemorated on the Llandudno War Memorial.
