Wellington T2802 Memorial

On the 24th of May 1942, Wellington Mk1c T2802 left its base at RAF Newmarket to take part in a regular training mission.

A two engined bomber, T2802 was used by No.1483 Target Towing & Gunnery Flight based at Newmarket. The aircraft, using cine camera guns, was engaged on a fighter affiliation exercise with a Spitfire. After a short flight from its home base, it landed at RAF Duxford for a briefing with the Spitfire pilot before taking off again at 1520 hours and flew to a height of approximately 7000 feet. While taking evasive action from a simulated attack and taking a steep turn, a structural failure occurred in the starboard wing causing the outer plane of that wing to become detached. The pilot was unable to control the aircraft and it crashed near the village of Stanton, Suffolk at 1602 hours.

There were no survivors.
